Andrew C. Stenhouse, M.D.

On September 15, 2021, Our Heavenly Father called Andrew C. Stenhouse, M.D. into His Heavenly home.

Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 20, 2021 at First Baptist Church Sanctuary, 1208 S. Tyler with Pastor Kevin Clowe and Dr. Roberto Estevez as officiants. Family will receive guests at Chesney’s, 715 S. Polk following the service. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Dr. Stenhouse was born on June 30, 1934 in Detroit, MI to his loving parents, Andrew Cowan Stenhouse and Catherine Ballantyne Gailey Stenhouse of Lanarkshire, Scotland. The family moved back to Scotland after the war where they resided in the UK until 1949. At the age of 16, Andrew entered the University of Dunedin where he commenced his medical studies graduating in 1959 with the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Medical Science and Bachelor of Surgery. Andrew played on the soccer and golf teams while at the University. Everyone knew and loved him for his dry, witty and quick sense of humor. While in New Zealand, Andrew married and had 2 children, Fiona Margaret and Andrew George.

Andrew worked as a doctor in various South Sea Islands including Fiji and Rarotonga. Andrew was elected a member of the Royal Australian College of Medicine in 1963. He continued to practice medicine as well as advancing his studies. After earning his Doctor of Medicine in 1968, he returned to the UK where he studied Tropical Medicine and conducted multiple research into the Rhino Virus, Smallpox, and Dengue Virus just to name a few. Dr. Stenhouse completed his fellowship in Virology and Tropical Disease. In 1969, he was elected as fellow by the Queen of England and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Andrew took his passion for people, his extensive knowledge of medicine and moved to Afghanistan to help set up a Medical School in Jalalabad to train Afaghani Doctors. Dr. Stenhouse earned the title of fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 1973. After training hundreds of physicians, Andrew felt led to come to the United States. He landed at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, TX where he was the Professor of Medicine. In late 1973, Dr. Ek Jones recruited the young, gifted Dr. Stenhouse to take over his private Internal Medicine practice in Amarillo, TX. Little did Andrew know at the time, that Amarillo would end up being his forever home.

Shortly after arriving in Amarillo, Andrew became a fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1975. He then met and married the love of his life, Linda Kay Swan in 1975. Together, they had one daughter, Andrea. Andrew began leaving his mark on hearts and lives. While establishing himself in Amarillo, Dr. Stenhouse forged lifelong relationships with many physicians, nurses and others in the medical community. Everyone always loved to see him, even though his handwriting was impossible to read dahhhling!

In 1983-1984, Andrew was elected President of both Medical and Dental departments at High Plains Baptist Hospital and continued serving in his private practice until 2000. Andrew attempted retirement, but quickly realized he was not finished with his medical purpose. Dr. Stenhouse followed his missionary heart and served on many medical mission trips in Russia on the mercy flight planes. Dr. Stenhouse was appointed Chief of Staff over the VA Healthcare System in Amarillo where he made many significant improvements in the quality of care for the area veterans. He earned a National Award presented to him by General Colin Powell for being the most improved VA Hospital in the country under his leadership. In  2004, he went on to become a Professor of Medicine at Texas Tech University. From Texas Tech, Dr. Stenhouse went to work at Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital on the launch team for the hospitalist program. He also worked at BSA Hospice for many years. Dr. Stenhouse worked at the clinics of Park Central when he retired in 2013.

Andrew not only had a passion for people but a deep love for his entire family. He enjoyed fast European cars and being on the golf course as often as possible. His favorites include the old course at St. Andrews, Oak Tree and Pebble Beach. Andrew enjoyed embarrassing his sweets when he asked for a “fajeetah” (fajita) in the Taco Villa drive thru.

Dr. Stenhouse was a man of great faith. His purpose was sharing the hope of Christ and to worship him in all holiness, honor and humility. Andrew gave to all in need freely. He served in many capacities at the church families he belonged to.

Dr. Stenhouse was proceeded in death by his beloved wife Linda Kay Swan Stenhouse of Amarillo, TX; daughter, Fiona Margaret Hodgson of Christchurch, New Zealand; grandson, Zachary Augustine Alessandro Stenhouse-Anchondo; and granddaughter, Ziva Sarah Anastasia Stenhouse-Anchondo of Amarillo, TX.

He is survived by his son Andrew George Stenhouse and wife, Bridget Stenhouse of Tasmania; daughter, Andrea Catherine Carolyn Stenhouse-Jackson of Amarillo, TX; 2 grandsons, Timothy and Christopher Hodgson of Christchurch, New Zealand; and his sister, Grace Elizabeth Stenhouse of Inverclyde, Scotland.
