Albert Austin “Dutch” Crowell, 86 died Thursday, December 10, 2009. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 12th at United Methodist Church in Groom, TX. Rev. Weldon Reeves, will officiate. Burial will be held at Groom Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Mr. Crowell was born June 21, 1923 in Groom, Texas, to Walter and Luella Crowell. Dutch grew up in Groom and graduated from Groom High School in 1941. He fell in love and married his lovely wife, Dora Margaret Crowell, also of Groom on June 27, 1943. Dutch enlisted in the military during World War II and served in the Army Air Force Signal Corps in Italy, Germany and France where he was one of the very first American RADAR operators. After the war he returned to his wife, Margaret, in their home town of Groom where he was a farmer and rancher for sixty three years. There they raised two sons, Jerry and John and one daughter, Connie. Dutch was very active in the community of Groom where he was a school board member helping build the school’s first all weather track. He also loved working with the youth of the community by coaching Little League baseball and directing summer youth track programs. He also taught numerous children to water ski at nearby Lake McClellan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Dora Margaret; a daughter, Connie Sue Barnard and husband, Chris of Melrose, NM; two sons, Jerry Austin Crowell and wife, Melissa of Eden, TX and John Dale Crowell and wife, Michele of Pampa, TX; eleven grandchildren, Bryan Crowell of Austin, TX, Sean Crowell and wife, Amy of Groom, TX, Evan Crowell of Baltimore, MD, Lauren Hodges and husband Chris of Amarillo, TX, Craig Crowell and Keisha Crowell of Pampa, TX, Call Barnard, Clint Barnard, Cara Barnard, Caley Barnard and Cade Barnard all of Melrose, NM; and three great-grandchildren, Lyllian, Dora and Isaac.
The family suggests memorials be made to the United Methodist Church of Groom, 303 E. 2nd, Groom, TX 79039 and Ussery-Roan Texas Veterans Home of Amarillo, 1020 Tascosa Rd., Amarillo, TX 79124.
