Allen Payne Jones

Allen Payne Jones, 88, died Sunday, November 29, 2009, in Amarillo.  A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel at Polk Street United Methodist Church.
Mr. Jones was born in Eddy, Texas on July 3, 1921 to Allen L. and Elizabeth Overton Jones.  He graduated from Eddy High School in 1939 and attended Baylor University until 1942 when he joined the Army Air Corps.  He proudly served during WWII from 1942-1945, as a tail gunner in a B-17 in the European Theatre, receiving the Air Medal.  After his tour of duty, Mr. Jones married Marietta Jean Odom and completed his Masters in math and education at Baylor University.
Mr. Jones served as superintendent of Adrian, Darrouzett, Lakeview, and Waka Independent School Districts. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Lion’s Club, and Methodist Men in the communities where he served as superintendent and was the Scout Master of the Adrian Boy Scouts.
Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Jones moved to Amarillo and dedicated time to the care of their grandchildren.  Throughout his retirement, Mr. Jones enjoyed woodworking, playing golf, watching sports and his daily crossword puzzle.   Mr. Jones was a member of the Homebuilders Sunday School class at Polk Street United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Theo Haney, three brothers, Laverne, I.D., and George Jones.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Marietta Odom Jones; son, Raymond and daughter-in-law, Brenda Jones, of Amarillo; grandchildren Jennifer and David Edwards of Smithville, and Adeana and Jared Chasteen of Fort Worth.  Mr. Jones had four great- grandchildren, Carlee and Blythe Edwards, and Andrew and Noah Chasteen.
The family would like to thank all of the dedicated staff at Craig United Methodist Retirement Center for their diligent care for the past four years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Polk Street United Methodist Church.
