Allen Shifrin, 85, died Thursday, October 31, 2013.
Private entombment services were in Llano Pantheon Mausoleum by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Allen Shifrin was born in St. Louis, Missouri February 4, 1928. His parents were Max and Bess (Glassman) Shifrin. A younger brother, Eugene, died and there are two surviving brothers, Sanford and Charlyn Shifrin of Scottsdale, Arizona and Larry Shifrin of Chandler, Texas.
Allen graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri with a BA degree in journalism and speech. He served in the Korean War as a corporal with the Army in Public Information.
He also worked in radio and television in St. Louis and came to Amarillo in 1955 to put KRAY radio on the air. He was Stubby on KFDA-TV and Captain Kidd on KGNC-TV. He worked at KFDA-TV as continuity writer, program director and general manager until 1972. He then went to Amarillo College to help establish a radio and television program and put KACV radio on the air. Allen also served as public information director at Amarillo College until he retired in 1989.
Allen has been active in the Amarillo Little Theater, March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy, RSVP Chamber of Commerce, Literacy Council, Better Business Bureau, and chairman of the Potter-Randall 911 and United Way. He also volunteered at the Veterans Hospital and Northwest Texas Hospital in the gift shop.
Mr. Shifrin was president of the Amarillo Advertising Federation twice and received the Silver Medal Award and a lifetime achievement award from the Advertising Federation. He has served on numerous committees of the 10th District of the AAF and received the outstanding educator of the year award from that organization. He was also inducted into the Panhandle Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame.
Since retiring, Allen traveled extensively with his lifelong friend O. Joe Russell who has since passed away.
