Amos Britten, 77, of Groom, surrounded by his loving family, was taken home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 1, 2013.
Rosary will be Wednesday 7p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Groom. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10a.m. Thursday, September 5th at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 411 Ware St., Groom TX with Rev. Arokia Raj Samala as Celebrant and Rev. Mieczyslaw Przepiora of Panhandle as Con-Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Groom. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Amos was born February 1, 1936 in Groom, Texas to Leo and Marietta Britten. He graduated from Groom High School in 1954. Shortly after graduating from Groom High School, Amos started his lifelong passion of farming, working closely with his brother Lynn. He married Loretta Copeland April 23, 1962 in Amarillo.
The Texas Historical Commission awarded Amos for his distinguished service in 1979 as well as 1980. In 1989, he was recognized as Carson County Outstanding Farmer of The Year. In 2006 Amos was honored as the Resident Conservation Farmer of The Year by McClellan Creek SWCD. He served on the Groom ISD board. Amos was Director and President, as well as co-founder of Groom Irrigation Gas Inc. He was a lifetime member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Groom and served on the Parrish Counsel. Amos was instrumental in erecting the ornamental iron fence around St. Mary’s Cemetery. On June 4, 2009, the family farm was recognized by the Family Land Heritage Foundation to be a 100 year old historical farm, which was originally established in 1905.
Amos was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Carey Bichsel and one brother, Lynn Britten.
Survivors include his loving wife Loretta, two sons, Terrell Britten and wife Rebecca of Waxahachie, Charles Britten and wife Barbara of Groom; two daughters Rebecca Weatherford and husband Kirk of Sanford, Karen Boatman and husband Kenneth of Dumas; two sisters, Georgann Hinson and husband Bill of Groom and Mariellen Homfeld and husband Jerry of Herefor; Twelve grandchildren, Lindsey Boman and husband Brad of Canyon, Neal West of Amarillo, Brad Boatman and wife Cory of San Antonio Texas, Matt Boatman of Dumas, Chance Britten and wife Rebecca of Dumas, Chris Kidd and wife Emily, Kara and Kayla Kidd all of Amarillo and eight great grandchildren.
He loved the Lord, his family and farming and will be greatly missed. Psalms 112: 1-9
