Archie ‘A.J.’ Looten, 92, of Amarillo died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016.
Vigil services will be at 6:30 PM Sunday, October 23, 2016 in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Panhandle. Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 PM Monday, October 24, 2016 in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Panhandle with the Rev. Anthony Neusch as the celebrant. Burial will follow at Panhandle Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
A.J. was born March 20, 1924, in Henley, Missouri to Leo and Pauline Looten and moved to Texas at 17 months. Following graduation from Groom High School in 1942, he farmed with his dad, Leo. During WWII, he served his country in the 87th Infantry Division in ETO (European Theatre of Operations). He returned to Groom in 1946 to pursue his career in farming. Archie married Gladys Detten on October 25, 1947, in St. Francis Church and they were lifetime residents of Carson County where they farmed. Archie was a loving husband, wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys; four daughters, Kathy Krile and husband Tom of Lubbock, Clara Lively of San Antonio, Teresa Sarzynski and husband Mike of Amarillo, and JoAnn Cox and husband Jeff of Dewey, OK; three sons, James Looten and wife Priscilla of Austin, Carl Looten and wife Angela of Amarillo, and Dan Looten and wife Patricia of Panhandle; three sisters, Rosella Goranson of Broken Arrow, OK, Virginia Stephens of Houston and Dorothy Garmon and husband Mike of Yellville, AR. Archie will be fondly remembered by his 17 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
The family will have a visitation at the home of Dan and Patricia Looten Sunday afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Square House Museum, Box 276, Panhandle, TX 79068; or School Sisters of St. Francis, Box 906, Panhandle, TX 79068.
