Arene Ellen Doerfler, 90, of Amarillo, died Sunday, December 11, 2016 in Weslaco.
A Rosary and Vigil will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, December 15, 2016 in Brentwood Chapel of Schooler Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 PM Friday, December 16, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, 1200 S. Washington St. with Rev. Scott Raef as celebrant. Arrangements are with Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Arene was born on April 19, 1926 in Eastland, Texas to James Arthur and Julia M. Duckworth. She was raised in The Oddfellows Mother and Children’s Home in Corsicana. She married Roy Doerfler on September 26, 1945. She was a homemaker and loved to sew and cook. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts through West Texas State University and also taught for Alamo Catholic High School. She was a member and former president of the St. Mary’s Altar Society. She was also a member of St. Cecilia’s Circle. She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by her husband Roy; one daughter, Linda Frances; her parents; two brothers and one sister.
Arene is survived by one daughter, Ellen Allen and husband John of Weslaco; four sons, Jere F. Doerfler and wife Cathy of Lawton, OK, Richard F. Doerfler of Peyton, CO, Matthew F. Doerfler and wife Julie of Amarillo, Mark F. Doerfler and wife Nadine of San Antonio; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 2 great great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Cathedral Building Fund, 1200 S. Washington St., Amarillo, TX 79102.
