Bernard “Barney” J. Cunningham, 92, passed away November 21, 2014.

Graveside Service will be at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Crestview Memorial Park Cemetery in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Bernard was born to Joseph and Margaret Cunningham on February 4, 1922, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was a 1941 graduate of Tulsa Central High School and subsequently entered The College of Geology at Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Bernard was called to military service; he entered the U.S. Navy on July 9, 1943, and was honorably discharged on April 27, 1946. During his time in the Navy Bernard earned a Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. Bernard returned to college at Oklahoma State University, Completed his studies and was a 1948 graduate from the College of Geology at Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Barney was a Certified Professional Geological Scientist affiliated with the Association of Professional Geological Scientists (APGS) and The American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG).

After graduation, Bernard began working as a petroleum geologist for Phillips Petroleum Company in Wichita Falls, Texas. While working at Phillips Petroleum he met Jacqueline Griffis Harrison and married Jackie and her son Michael on August 11, 1951. Barney transferred to Amarillo with Phillips Petroleum early in his career and continued to work for them until he joined Texas Panhandle Sample Log Service where he and two friends obtained owned ownership in 1959 with Bernard eventually becoming the sole proprietor.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jacqueline Griffis Cunningham, daughter, Sue Lynn Cunningham Bettis; sisters, Louise Olsen, and Eileen Luke, brothers, Joseph A. Cunningham, Robert “Bob” Cunningham, and his parents Joseph A. and Margaret Cunningham.

He is survived by son Michael F. Harrison and wife Mary of Canyon, and son in law Kip Bettis of Corpus Christi, along with numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Cottages at Quail Creek for the love, care and respect they showed Barney while he resided with them and requests that if you would like to honor Barney please perform a random act of kindness for someone.

He made the choice to love and he didn’t have to!

The family will receive friends and relatives from 4:00-5:00 p.m., Sunday, November, 23, 2014 at the funeral home.
