Bernice was born July 10, 1919 at Laurens, SC to Matthew and Nellie Gossett. Bernice was raised by her grandparents, George W. and Susie C. Gossett in Anderson, SC. After graduation from Anderson Girls High School, she married her high school sweetheart Robert L. Allen. To their marriage were born two children, George M. Allen of Canyon and Doris Ann Reed of Fort Smith, AR.
In 1954, Bernice married Arward L. Smith and they were married for 47 years. Arward was in the US Air Force and they traveled worldwide until his retirement. They were active members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Bernice was a businesswoman all of her life. She managed a jewelry store in Washington, DC, worked in supervisory positions for civil service at many US Air Force bases, and was the office manager for two television and three radio stations when she retired. She enjoyed being the boss. She enjoyed her work for the Widowed Persons Services (WPS). She donated many hours to this organization each week.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, one brother and two sisters. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Robert L. Allen and Alward L. Smith.
She is survived by her son George M. Allen and wife Paula of Canyon, and daughter Doris Ann Reed and husband Gary Don of Fort Smith, AR. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
