Bettye Purgason Gray (84) of Amarillo died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015.
A celebration of life services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 18 at St. Stephen United Methodist Church with Dr. Stan Cosby officiating.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Directors, 4100 S. Georgia, Amarillo, with a visitation at the funeral home today, from 7-8 pm.
Bettye was born August 2, 1931 in Gainesville, TX to Ralph and Fannie Purgason.  She graduated from Gainesville High School and the University of North Texas with a degree in Business Educations and was named Who’s Who in Business.  Bettye married the love of her life, William Luis “Bill” Gray in Wichita Falls, TX on December 20, 1952 and had 37 wonderful years of marriage before Bill’s death in 1989.
Bettye and Bill lived in Arlington, TX for 12 years, where all 4 of their children were born.  Putting family first, they made a huge leap of faith and moved their family to Pampa, TX, where they owned and operated a Western Auto Store.  After ten years, the family relocated to Amarillo, TX, where Bettye continued her accounting career for the next 37 years beginning with J. A. Whittenburg III and ending with many wonderful years at Maxor Corporation. Bettye always said Jerry and Margaret Hodge treated her as part of their family which led her to continue working for them until the age of 81.
Bettye was a long time member of St. Stephen Methodist Church and the Pathfinders Sunday School Class.
Bettye was preceded in death by her husband Bill and her parents and two sisters.
She is survived by her daughters Kathy Clark and husband Randy, Jan Panger and husband Tom, Joan Puckett and husband Roger, and her son Bill Gray, Jr. and wife Jennifer; as well as her grandchildren Jeff Clark, Chris McDaniel, Christy Cox, Jenny Jones, Malarie Larson, Tyler Puckett, Alexander Gray, and Connor Gray and eleven great grandchildren.
The family request memorials be made to St. Stephen Methodist Church or City Church of Amarillo.  Bettye was an inspirational woman who only loved God more than her family.
