Brenda Kay Denny

January 8, 1951 — August 16, 2024

Amarillo

Brenda Kay Denny, 72, of Amarillo, passed peacefully at home on August 16, 2024, with her husband Don at her side for 53 years and 359 days. Brenda was born in 1951 to Wilburn Hughes and Neva Joyce Hughes in Crosbyton and was the oldest of 3 children born of the marriage. She graduated from Amarillo High as the last class before the “old” building burned down.

She spent her days raising her children, Steven and Stephanie, at home until they were both in school, and she returned to school herself. Working on her own homework after helping the kids with theirs, she earned her associate’s degree from Amarillo College, then her bachelor’s from West Texas State and her master’s from then West Texas A&M University. She was a Certified Paralegal by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and worked for several local lawyers and firms throughout her career. She looked forward to her yearly trips with the Paralegal Division around the world and saw 14 countries with them (Italy twice). She served on the board of the Texas Panhandle Paralegal Association and was a member until her retirement.

She loved her children, but they even took a backseat when the grandchildren arrived. Ethan, Logan, and Grant had the run of the house. They floated with her in the pool by summer and attended the Nutcracker with her in the winter. She loved black friday shopping and had been known to scour the ads after the turkey had been cleared from the table for the best giveaways, followed by the best deals. She plotted the best course to get the most benefit in the shortest trip long before it was the cool thing to do. She planned her gift-giving for the next year, beginning with the after-Christmas sales.

She enjoyed reading and snatched up every John Grisham book as it came out. She loved to cook for her family, and no one ever left her home hungry. She had a favorite dish for every holiday and loved a home full of people to celebrate every milestone of life.

She was a long-time member of Trinity Baptist Church and attended Paramount Baptist most recently.

Brenda is survived by her husband of a week shy of 54 years, Donald Lee Denny, son Steven and wife Mellessa, daughter Stephanie Jenkins, grandsons Ethan Jenkins, Logan Jenkins, and Grant Denny, sister Karen Tillerson, brother-in-law Dale Denny, sister-in-law Debbie Dawson and husband Frank, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilburn and Joyce Hughes, brother Tommy Hughes, and son David Vance Denny.

The family will receive friends at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia from 6-7:00 PM, Tuesday, August 20, 2024. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Schooler Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Anyone wishing to donate in Brenda's memory is asked to do so to the Texas Panhandle Paralegal Association scholarship fund.

TPPA, P.O. Box 1127, Amarillo, Tx. 79105, and specify it is for the Scholarship Fund in the care of Vicki Lorenzen, Treasurer.
