Carl Small, 93, of Amarillo, peacefully passed away at his home Sunday morning, March 6, 2016, surrounded by family.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10:00AM on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo with the Rev. Dr. Darrel Cory, of Grand Forks, ND officiating. A memorial service will be held at 2:30PM at Park Place Towers Parlor, 1300 S. Harrison, Amarillo, Texas 79101 with the Rev. Jerry Bell, Chaplain of Park Central officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia Amarillo, Texas 79110.
Carl was born and raised in Canyon, TX. As a young man he served in the infantry in the United States Army in WWII and used his G.I. Bill to earn a degree in accounting from West Texas University. In 1948 he married Amarillo native Maxine Campbell and together they raised two children, Laurie and Henry Small in Amarillo, TX. Spending most of his professional career in banking, Carl started at the First State Bank in Happy, TX and ultimately bought and ran the bank until he retired in 1990. In retirement, Carl appropriated his newfound free time to something dear to his heart: community service. As a tireless and dedicated volunteer, Carl spent most of the following decade supporting various charities and organizations. These included working at an adult literacy program at Amarillo College, delivering food for Meals on Wheels, providing tours and guidance at the Natural History Museum in Canyon, as well as working with the local Food Bank. He was also involved in a small museum in downtown Amarillo called the Sterquell Collection. The museum was an impressive collection of restored horse drawn wagons and carriages, which Carl held very close to his heart. Apart from his community service, he took great joy in caring for his lawn, his garden, and his bird feeders. He looked for any reason to be outdoors, evidenced by mowing his own lawn and hanging his simple but classic red Christmas lights into his 80’s. Carl also had a great affinity for his Black Jack, his Jack Daniels, and anything with wheels - especially his little red Mazda Miata. The car was a surprise retirement gift from his wife of more than 50 years. After Maxine’s death he remarried to Grace Cory. During their 16 plus years of marriage, Carl and Grace relished their time together traveling the country and the world to see friends, family, and distant treasures. His two children, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, Grace and her family survive him. Carl was a smart, hardworking, dedicated and generous man known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor. He will be sorely missed, but forever remembered by all who knew him.
