Carol Sue Neely Holmes
Carol Sue Neely Holmes went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 28, 2022 after a lengthy battle with dementia. She was born on December 22, 1944 to Irvin Erastus Neely and Vinola Lavonia Fleming Balding in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She married Phil Holmes in Dalhart, Texas in 1980, and lived, worked, and was part of that community for over 40 years. She was also a member of the St. James Episcopal Church in Dalhart, Texas.
Carol was a free- spirit who was very witty, and a great prankster. She excelled at crafts, cooking, and sewing as she even made her daughters’ prom dresses and a couple of their wedding dresses. She enjoyed music, coffee, being the golf “pro” at Dalhart Country Club, and taking shots of tequila with her sisters.
She will be remembered by those who loved her as a survivor, a wonderful big sister, a devoted wife, a loving mom, grandma, and great grandma, a fun aunt, and a loyal friend. She was a beautiful, sassy, and spunky woman who lived her life to the fullest.
Carol is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a granddaughter and a grandson.
She is survived by her children : Julie Gerber Wilde (Kevin), Donnie Gerber (Kim), Billy Gerber, Gena Gerber Hill, and Tish Gerber Cordova (Archie) all of Amarillo, Texas, her bonus daughter Carey Holmes Nels (Sean) of Flourissant, Colorado and bonus son Johnny Holmes (Kay) of Austin, Texas; her siblings Edna Thompson of Carrollton, Texas, Alma Davis of Vernon, Texas, Gene Neely (Genny) of Amarillo, Texas, and Pam Mount of Carrollton, Texas; eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her faithful companion, her dog CoCo.
The family would like to thank the many health care workers in Amarillo for the fantastic care they provided for our mom, specifically the BSA Hospice of the Southwest and the Amarillo Center for Skilled Care.
Graveside services for Carol will be held in Dalhart on August 27, 2022 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be given to The Twilight Fund in Dalhart, Texas (PO Box 471, Dalhart, TX. 79022) or your favorite local animal shelter/rescue.
