Carol Yvonne Ray, 88, of Amarillo, passed peacefully in her home on December 26, 2024.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, from 10 am to 5 pm at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia. Funeral services will take place in the funeral home’s Brentwood Chapel at 1 pm on Thursday, January 2, 2025, with Pastor John Donnerberg presiding. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Carol was born February 20, 1936, in Wellington, Texas to James B. and Nettie Ruth Cook. Carol graduated from Snyder High School in 1953. Following graduation, she attended Texas Tech University then moved to Amarillo where she met her husband, John H. Ray. Together they established their home in Amarillo and had one son. Carol was a gifted musician playing both the organ and piano. She played the piano for the Kiwanis Club in Plainview and after moving to Amarillo, she was a pianist for the noon Kiwanis Club of Amarillo. She was also the organist for several churches and was a talented artist enjoying both oil and acrylic painting. She also loved to sew and enjoyed working in her beautiful yard. In her life, she showed true courage and great strength amidst tremendous heartbreak when her only child preceded her in death in a tragic accident.
Carol worked for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. and Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo before moving to Plainview in 1966. She worked for International Harvester Credit Corporation, First National Bank and City National Bank in Plainview. She and her husband, with Atmos Energy Corporation, were transferred to Amarillo, Dallas, Lafayette, Louisiana and Lubbock where he retired. After retiring, they moved back to Amarillo in September 2001.
Carol is preceded in death by her parents, brother, James L. Cook, a son, John H. Ray III, and her husband John H. Ray Jr. Carol is survived by an uncle, Dr. Lonnie W. Fuson of Lawton, Oklahoma, many cherished cousins and a host of dear friends, and her little ShiTzu girl Bella whom she adored.
