Carolyn F Ballew

November 24, 1923 — April 17, 2009

Heaven was made more joyful when Carolyn Fountain Ballew, age 85, went to be with her Lord on April 17, 2009 after complications from congestive heart failure.  Her life here on earth included being a wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, freelance writer, Waco Army-Air field ”lady riveter”, and Ennis High School cheerleader.  Though she delighted in all of the above; her greatest joy and fulfillment came from serving the Lord; as her favorite verse was Philippians 1:21 “For to me to live is Christ…”

Carolyn was born November 24, 1923 in Ennis Texas to Lynn H. and Sarah Ann Fountain.  After attending Baylor University from 1943 to 1944, she married her high school sweetheart J. D. (Julius Durwood) Ballew on May 6, 1944 at Bowman Field outside Louisville, KY.  After WWII, Carolyn and J. D. lived in Lubbock and Seagraves before moving to Amarillo, TX in 1951, where J. D. accepted a position as assistant power plant manager with Southwestern Public Service Co.  Over the next fifty-two years they raised three children, served faithfully at First Baptist Church, Amarillo, as Sunday School teachers, and traveled annually to Colorado where Carolyn drew much of her inspiration for her articles and books such as Mystery in the Rockies and Queen of the Rockies. Carolyn served as president of the Panhandle Pen women from 1977 – 1978.  She frequently participated in mission trips which included work in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Virginia, South Dakota, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, south Texas on the Rio Grande River, Mexico, and Jamaica.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter Gloria Cowan and husband Lee, of Cedar Hill, TX; two sons, David D. Ballew and wife Ann, of Abilene, TX, and Daniel B. Ballew and wife Linda, of Amarillo; her uncle Forrest Fountain and wife, Wanda, of Memphis, TX.; six grandchildren, J.D. Hix and wife, Amber, of Richardson, TX , Mindy Bible and husband Tom of Midland, TX, Brad Ballew of Abilene, TX, Daniel Morris and Amber of Amarillo, Michael Morris and wife Angie, and Kayla Davis and husband Skyler, both of Amarillo; six great-grandchildren, Landon, Logan, and Lauren Bible, all of Midland, and Berkleigh Nicole Shook, Trinity Morris and Alexis Davis, all of Amarillo.
Burial and a graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 22 at 11:00 AM at Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis, TX.
