Catherine D. Koehler

Catherine D. Koehler of Amarillo went safely home on March 29, 2014.
She was born on November 24, 1911 in Dalhart, Texas to Clara and Robert Dilworth.
A private family mass was celebrated at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Dalhart, Texas. Interment was at Dalhart City Cemetery.
Catherine married Raymond E. Koehler on April 9, 1934 in Dalhart.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary and Maurice Schooler, Louise and Benny Conley, Joan and Charlie Graham, and a son, Mike and Sharon Koehler, all of Amarillo. She was “Ma” to thirteen grandchildren and “GiGi” to sixteen great-grandchildren.
Ray and Catherine survived the dustbowls days, two World Wars, and the trials and joys of six children while loving each other dearly through it all. She was a faithful and the oldest charter member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
Catherine loved oil painting, ceramics, and needlepointing. She made many intricate stockings, pillows and crosses for her family. She kept a sharp mind as an avid reader and a faithful follower of “Wheel of Fortune”. Catherine also loved the Dallas Cowboys and Notre Dame football games while bantering with her sons-in-law who considered her a dear friend.
After moving to Amarillo from Dalhart in 1994, Catherine was devoted to Saturday night evening Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. She enjoyed dinner at The Embers Steak house (formerly David’s Steak house) or The Amarillo Club. She loved mornings spent reading her devotionals and watching her birds and ducks. She loved her fireplace in the winter and her patio in the summer. She especially enjoyed an evening scotch while visiting with friends and family. Over the years, we loved collecting “Ma-isms.”
With deep faith, Catherine embraced life with grace and dignity. Her family often sought her counsel and she never hesitated to share her life experiences, lessons learned and wisdom without judgment. Over the years, she taught us to “leave it at the cross” as she truly did. She was a realist but remained hopeful and positive knowing God was in control.
We are grateful for her long life, sharp mind, quick wit, and sweet spirit. Catherine was fully present with us until the very end. She taught us much and loved us well. How blessed we have been!
The family will host a memorial mass in celebration of Catherine’s life at a later date.
