Charleen C. Gilbert, age 89 of Amarillo and formerly from Abilene Texas, peacefully passed away January 19, 2019, three years after suffering a debilitating stroke.
Funeral services will be on January 23rd, 2:00 PM at Bell Avenue Baptist Church. Reverend Danny Logan will officiate. Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo.
Charleen was born on December 30, 1929 in Colorado City, Texas to Charles and Ruth Buchanan. She graduated from Colorado City High School and later attended Business College in Abilene Texas. She married Dale Gilbert on February 18, 1950 in Ft. Worth Texas and was his lifelong companion.
She was also a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. After moving to Abilene Texas, Charleen worked for Thornton’s Department Store where she managed the Fabric Department and traveled around the country purchasing inventory for the store. Charleen was an extremely talented artist, excellent cook, and loved gardening and reading. She also had a beautiful voice and sang in her church choir, including as a soloist. Additionally, she was a member of the Abilene Celebration Singers, a premier choral group. She and Dale also loved playing dominoes and “42” with family and friends and watching the Dallas Mavericks basketball team.
Charleen is proceeded in death by her husband Dale, her parents, a brother and a sister.
She is survived by two sisters, two brothers, son Lowell Gilbert and wife Cleo Romero of Santa Fe, NM, son Larry Gilbert and wife Linda of Amarillo, Tx, and son Richard Gilbert and wife Nellie of Royce City, Tx. She also has four grandsons, Ryan, Aaron, Tyler, and Adam Gilbert and six great grandchildren.
