Affectionately known as Charlie by those who knew and loved him, he was born March 23, 1938 to Frank and Hazel Broomhead. He moved to Amarillo from Hartley with his parents and older sister Rita.

Charlie began his career in Broadcasting in 1955 at KFDA Channel 10 as a cameraman. He spent 6 months behind the camera before being promoted to the field as a reporter. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1956, and was forever a Sandie at heart. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Broadcasting from Amarillo College in 1958. In 1962 Charlie left KFDA TV to do on-air news at KFDA radio.

In 1966 KFDA radio changed its call letters to KPUR.  Charlie was best known in the ‘70s for his contribution to the “Jay Mike, Charlie and Granny” morning show. It was the number one morning show in Amarillo for years.”Charlie was an original KPUR “Good Guy” for over 12 years. He went on to Q107 as manager and co-host the morning show; Jack, Dagne and Charlie until 1985. He remained manager and retired from broadcasting in 1993.

Charlie dearly loved Christmas and his community. He was instrumental in bringing the holiday spirit to the Panhandle using his unique sense of humor and outrageous contests to raise money for a live Christmas tree for the Amarillo Civic Center. He would personally travel to New Mexico to pick out the tree.

Charlie loved his career in Broadcasting but applied his talents to other areas of country and community with serving in the Army Reserves, working with Wonderland Amusement Park, announcer for Thursday night Wrestling, voice-overs for television commercials, serving on many working Boards such as Alzheimer’s Association, Amarillo Community Center, Amarillo Parks and Recreation and Boys Ranch.
Charlie changed career direction when he accepted the position of Executive Director of Potter-Randall County Emergency Communications District. His vision and dedication to the newly formed 9-1-1 system forever changed the way First Responders were dispatched to an emergency. Charlie felt his greatest accomplishment was the implementation of Phase I and II of wireless 9-1-1 calls and the development of the Geographic Information System.

With all of his accomplishments, his quick wit, sense of humor, compassion, guidance, charm and that laugh will be what Charlie is remembered for.
The family will receive guests at the funeral home tonight (Wednesday) from 5 PM until 7 PM.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Rita and his beloved companion, Pollo the little black Poodle.
