Charles Edward Ferguson, passed away on October 29th, 2017. No services are scheduled. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., Amarillo, Texas.
Charles was born on June 23, 1924, in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Charles was the second of five children born to Ervin Ferguson and Lillian Belle Gunter. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, and his wife Katherine who he loved and relied on. Charles (“Daddio”) is survived by four loving children and their families, Cheryl Carter and Robert Petty of Kerrville, David Ferguson and Mindy Greenwood of Amarillo, Daniel and Su Ferguson of Aiken, SC, Tommi Ferguson and Scott Blackwood of Austin, as well as her sister Mary Ruth Gunter of Amarillo. He had six grandchildren who he loved without reservation: Bonnie Gilmer, Carrie Corbin, Clint Ferguson, Deana Noelle Edwards, Ellie Blackwood and Ava Blackwood; and great-grandchildren, Devyn Laughlin, Conner Laughlin, Bailey Chancellor and Jade Edwards; and many nieces and nephews who he cherished.
Charles – “Charlie” to his friends – spent his early years in Oklahoma before the family moved to Amarillo. As a young man he worked as a caddy at the Amarillo Country Club and in the Plains Dairy where he developed a life-long love of ice cream. Just before he turned 19, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served in WWII from 1943-1945. After the war, he met and married Katherine (in 1950) and attended college on the GI Bill, graduating from Texas Tech in 1952 with a BS in Geology. Charles worked as a petroleum geologist for many decades, with firms such as Castleman Oil Company and Riata Energy, and still enjoyed poring over his survey maps well into his 90s; he was also active with the Masonic Lodge of Amarillo. Charles was friendly, affable, and charitable – a dreamer who offered his big heart and generous spirit to his loved ones (and even his many pets). He will be dearly missed.
The family is very grateful to Charles’ caregivers: Lee Lewis, the capable staff of Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home, and BSA Hospice of the Southwest. The family also suggests any memorial gifts be made to Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society, 3501 S. Osage St, Amarillo, Texas.
A small family visitation will be held from 4:00-5:30 p.m., Friday, November 3, 2017 at the funeral home.
