Clara Barbara O'Neal

January 4, 1906 — December 21, 2009

Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 26th, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Celebrant will be Msgr. Harold Waldow.  The Burial will follow and be held at Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Clara Barbara O’Neal passed away on Monday, December 21, 2009 with her family by her side.
Clara was born on January 4, 1906 in Caroll, Iowa to the late Joseph and Rosa Bromert.
She moved to Amarillo, Texas, in 1925 to work for her brother, the late Dr. Joseph Bromert.  She then attended nurses training at St. Anthony’s Hospital and graduated to private duty nursing in 1928.
She married the late Albert Thomas O’Neal in Amarillo, in 1932.  They had three children, Robert Donald O’Neal, the late Sharon Rose O’Neal and Richard Alan O’Neal.
Clara had many wonderful years caring for patients as a private duty nurse and would often travel with doctors delivering babies in rural areas of the Panhandle.  She retired after 42 years from professional nursing but continued to care for friends who were ill by bringing them food, home-made blankets and comfort.  She remained very active in her later years by baking, painting, knitting, and a multitude of other activities.  She enjoyed traveling and visited Europe, Alaska, Mexico and Canada.  She was a member of the Extension Homemakers Club and served over 2000 hours volunteering for the Nurses Auxiliary at St. Anthony’s Hospital.
Clara was an active charter member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and attended daily mass up until two weeks prior to her passing.  Her faith was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Clara remained living in her home for 64 years and enjoyed wonderful health for 103 years.  She often attributed her health to years of eating oatmeal and keeping her mind active by playing Scrabble.
She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be remembered for her unending generosity toward others and for the love she gave to her family and friends.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to Penny Hays, who helped care for Clara and all her devoted friends.  She was truly the best mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother one could have ever hoped for and we find peace in the knowledge that she has had a wonderful passage into heaven.
She is preceded in death by her eight siblings; her husband, Albert Thomas O’Neal and her daughter, Sharon Rose O’Neal.
She is survived by her sons; Robert Donald O’Neal of Amarillo, Texas, and Richard Alan O’Neal of Amarillo, Texas; her daughter-in-law, Claire O’Neal of Amarillo, Texas; and her eight grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
The viewing will be held at Schooler Funeral home beginning Wednesday, December 23rd, at 8:00am continuing until Saturday, December 26th, at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Mary’s Catholic Church’s building fund, 1200 S. Washington, Amarillo, TX 79102.
