Daniel "Dan" Ashford

Daniel “Dan” Ashford, 98, of Groom died May 2, 2018 in Amarillo.

A visitation will be held from 3-4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 7, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Groom. Burial will follow in Groom Cemetery.

Dan was born April 21, 1920 in Cunningham, Texas to George and Susie Ashford.

At 15, he left home to work at the CCC Camp in Montana. Dan enlisted in the United States Army during WWII and proudly served 42 months with the 821st Engineering Battalion in the South Pacific. He worked in a bakery and a gin around the time he met Pat. Soon after, they were married. Dan and Pat moved to Amarillo and he was employed at a carbon black plant then in 1952, he started at Pantex. He worked there for 34 years. After retirement, golfing became Dan’s passion. He played at least 4 times a week at the Clarendon Country Club and had great memories during that time.

When they moved to Groom, he never regretted it. Dan and Pat raised 4 children and lived in the same house they bought in 1956. Groom was always his home.

Dan played golf well into his 90’s until he was forced to move to Ussery Roan TSVH in 2016.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Pat; his parents, George and Susie Ashford; 4 sisters; and 1 brother.

Dan is survived by 4 children and their spouses; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Groom Cemetery Association, Groom Ambulance Service or Volley’s for Veterans, 4205 S. Hayden, Amarillo Texas 79110.
