Donald K. Bain, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, with ties to Coldwater Kansas and Amarillo Texas, passed away in Amarillo on Thursday May 28th from complications of mesothelioma.
Donald is survived by his wife of 60 years, Edith G. Bain, sons Stephen, Gregory, and Gary, grandsons James, Matthew, and Joshua, granddaughters Nicole and Lissa, great-grandsons Osyrus, Landon, and Carson, great-granddaughters Holly, and Love. Donald is also survived by a brother, Charles and two sisters, Roberta and Mary. Donald was predeceased by one son, Jeffrey, a brother, Richard and a sister Mildred.
Don was born on a farm near Coldwater Kansas to Bennie and Lola Bain in 1935. He attended school in Oklahoma and Kansas and joined the Navy soon after high school and became a Navy Corpsman. In 1955 he married Edith Simpson and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.
Don served as an enlisted corpsman in the Navy for 10 years and earned a Bachelor’s degree from George Washington University. Don was commissioned as an officer and served for an additional 14 years earning a Master’s Degree from the Naval Postgraduate School. As an officer, Don served in hospital service and administration. During his career he served aboard the USS Anderson, USS Midway, USS Hancock, and USS Repose. He served in Vietnam and at multiple on-shore bases until retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1977. Don then worked for many years as a real estate broker in Texas and Colorado.
One of Don’s major joys was traveling with his wife in their RV on trips throughout the western US. As members of the Pikes Peak Rollers RV Club of Colorado Springs, Don and Edith enjoyed the company of other RV enthusiasts on many trips.
In the last year they have enjoyed the support and kinship of Edith’s sister Joyce Clark in Amarillo.
