Don Shumaker, 76, of Amarillo died Monday, February 3, 2014.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2525 Wimberly Rd., with the Rev. Dr. Clay Brown officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia St.
Don was born September 26, 1937, in Galesburg, Illinois, to Delwyn Eugene and Marie Lillian Shumaker. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1955 and moved to Amarillo soon after, working for his father at Apex Plumbing and Heating. In 1959, Don moved to Las Vegas, where he began learning his craft in sheet metal and worked as a security guard at the Flamingo Casino.
After ten years, he returned to Amarillo and married Mary Lee Owens on October 17, 1970. Don began his long career at Pantex in 1971. In his 39 years at the plant, Don apprenticed many younger tradesmen and served as president and vice president of the Metal Trades Council. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union from the late 1950’s until his retirement in 2010.
Don enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, and knowing more trivia than you. He adored his pets, which over the years included dogs, cats, and a backyard duck named Lyle. He was a man of contrast, possibly being the first person to hold equal appreciation for the Three Stooges and the Harrington String Quartet. He was a man of wit, quick with dry humor. And he was a man of love, filled with endless affection and pride for his close family. Don will be deeply missed by the many people who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Shumaker.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee; his son, Justin Shumaker, and wife Rachel Howell Shumaker, of Austin; his stepmother, Anna Shumaker, of Amarillo; his stepson, Steve Farren, and wife Nancy Garcia Farren, of Amarillo; his granddaughters, Leigh Anne Farren Williams and husband Jonathan, of Amarillo, Lara Farren of Lubbock, and Ella Shumaker of Amarillo; his stepbrother, Len Bauer and wife Trish, of Amarillo; his daughter, Donell Perez, and husband Robert; his grandsons, Jason Meyer, Scott Meyer and wife Leah Puroff Meyer, and Jonathan Meyer; and his son-in-law, John Meyer, and wife Luanne Meyer, of Amarillo.
