Dorothy Mae (Hayes) Huckaby

August 7, 1923 — April 17, 2023

Amarillo

Dorothy Mae Huckaby of Amarillo passed from this life on Monday, April 17, 2023, at the age of 99. Dorothy was born on August 7, 1923, in Paris, Texas, to Joseph H. Hayes and Lydia Burris Hayes. She grew up in Estelline, Texas, and graduated from school there.

On August 24, 1946, in Yuma, Arizona, Dorothy married her love, James Conley Huckaby, and began their life together, living on both coasts of the United States while Jake served in the Navy. He retired in 1960, and they moved to Amarillo to be close to family. They enjoyed square dancing and spent time camping with the Good Sam Club. Colorado and Arizona were two of her favorite places to visit.

Together, James and Dorothy welcomed two daughters into their lives. Dorothy was a kind and loving caretaker of her children. She was an encourager, always smiling, and was forever prepared for the next adventure in her life.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years; her parents; and her siblings John Hayes, Bill Hayes, Ellen Hill, Jimmie Tallon, Jean Perkins, and Linda Keever.

She is survived by her daughters: Sandra Anderson and husband Roger; Diane Hunt and husband Lacey; her brother, Bobby Hayes, and wife, Paula of Childress. She adored her granddaughters and had a special relationship with each one of them: Heather Stringer and husband, Dallas, of Amarillo; Robin Preston and husband, Kyle, of Whitefish, Montana; and Jennifer Hayden and husband, Matt, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was also blessed with eleven great-grandchildren: Mark, Hannah, Brooklyn, Ella, Jaxon, and Clint Stringer; Anderson, Lucinda, and Lydia Preston; and Harrison and Hunter Hayden.
