Dorothy Schneider

October 18, 1925 — January 16, 2015

Dorothy P Schneider, 89 of Amarillo, TX died January 16, 2015.

Memorial Services will be held on Monday, January 19th at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Amarillo with Dr. Howard Batson officiating.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.

Dorothy was born October 18, 1925 in Duluth, Minnesota to Burleigh and Edith Peterson. Dorothy was nicknamed "Dot" for her petite size, which she overcame with her boundless determination. She grew up just a few blocks from Lake Superior in the Lester Park neighborhood, and learned sailing and rowing from her father. Her mother had worked at Sylvain's, Duluth's finest ladies shop, and taught Dorothy about fine clothing and how to dress well. Dorothy grew-up being equally comfortable in a frilly dress and hat, or with her hand on the tiller of a sailboat.

Dorothy graduated from high school, and completed an associate’s degree from Duluth Junior College, and worked as a bank teller while attending the University of Minnesota in Duluth, where she completed a BS degree in 1951. After college she moved to Tampa, Florida with girlfriends to teach school, but eventually returned to Rochester, Minnesota where she met and married Rudy Schneider in 1957. They were married for 54 years until Rudy's passing in 2011.

Rudy and Dorothy moved to Amarillo in 1969, and Dorothy eventually went back to teaching as a reading specialist, serving at San Jacinto and Wolflin Elementary, Crocket Junior High School and Amarillo College. She was a champion for kids with reading disabilities. She was also an active member of PEO, and Westminster Presbyterian Church, before joining First Baptist.

Survivors include two sons, Mark of Centennial, CO and his wife Deana, and Matthew of Texarkana, TX; and five grandchildren, Eric, Tom, Carl, Rebecca and her husband Blake, and Peter.

The Schneider Family suggests that memorials be sent to the televised Sunday service of The First Baptist Church of Amarillo, Texas.
