Dorothy Gilmore Jones Smith, 94 of Amarillo died on Wednesday April 9, 2014.
Memorial Services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, April 15, 2014 in First Baptist Church Chapel; 1208 S. Tyler, with Dr. Winfred Moore officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home; 4100 S. Georgia St. Amarillo, TX.
Dorothy was born in El Paso, TX on February 15, 1920, to Jim and Florence Gilmore. The family moved to Dallas, where she attended schools and on March 11, 1939 married J. Melvin Jones. In 1940 they moved to Amarillo to go into business with Melvin’s brothers, thus forming the “Jones Bros. Chicken in the Rough” restaurants.
She was strong in her faith and was a member of the First Baptist Church for 74 years.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 39 years J. Melvin Jones, who passed away November 22, 1978 and husband of 12 years C. Paul Smith in 1996, a sister Jimmie Rae Gilmore, and a half-sister Frances Buckalew Zapata.
She is survived by her son, Mel Jones and wife Judy, three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 PM, Sunday at the funeral home.
