Dorothy Mae (Sterling) Thompson

Dorothy Mae (Sterling) Thompson, 106, of Amarillo, passed peacefully surrounded by family on September 25, 2023.

The family will receive guests at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia, on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral Services will take place in the funeral home’s Brentwood Chapel on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Royce Mason presiding. Burial will follow in Llano Cemetery.

Dorothy was born on March 31, 1917, in Amarillo, Texas, to Howard Lloyd and Effie Mae (Rush) Sterling. She was a graduate of Amarillo High School. On December 22, 1939, at Polk St. Methodist Church, she married her beloved Thomas Jefferson Thompson. Dorothy was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Claude for many years and a lifelong resident of Washburn, Texas, and Armstrong County.

By trade, Dorothy had the most rewarding job as a homemaker. She was an incredible wife and mother. She was gifted in gardening and could grow just about anything. She loved her animals, especially her chickens. Dorothy possessed many talents and was an amazing quilter. Dorothy could often be found reading a book when not tending to her gardening, animals, or quilting. She loved a good book and read about one a week.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, son Howard T. Thompson, daughter-in-law Sue Ann Currie-Thompson, and son-in-law Jerry M. Davis. Those left to cherish her memories are her daughter Gloria Davis, son James “Jim” Thompson and wife Sandie, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the Washburn Community Center or Washburn Volunteer Fire Department in honor of Dorothy Mae Thompson.
