Doug Barnes

September 30, 1944 — September 7, 2021

Doug Barnes, 77, of Amarillo died September 7, 2021.

A small family celebration of life will be held by his son at a later date. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Doug was born September 30, 1944 in Goldsboro, NC to Malcolm and Evelyn Barnes. Doug grew up loving baseball and even had a try-out as a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates before he enlisted and served in the Army as an MP. During military service as an MP, he stood honor guard at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda for the body of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, before serving in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive and earning a Bronze Star.

He met and married Melissa Kenyon and together they had 2 children, Christopher Douglas and Brittany Merrill. They were married from 1981-1993.

Doug met the love of his life in Shelia Dunn and has spent the last 20 years passionately routing on the Yankees, disgruntled over the "Washington Football Team" and spending his time in the garden alongside Shelia. The laughter of his life entered in 2015 when he became "Pops" to Christopher's 2 kids, Collin David and Callahan Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Brittany Merrill; parents, Evelyn Hamm Barnes and Sidney Malcolm Barnes; and his brother, Tony Romanus

Doug is survived by his wife, Sheila; son, Christopher Douglas and wife, Stacey; grandchildren, Collin David and Callahan Bailey; his sister, Joey (David) Kendelhardt of NC; and Sheila's grandchildren, Deacon and Victor Maynard.
