Dovie Ann Scott Cherry Barrett, 74, passed away December 21, 2014.
Memorial Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel with Royce Riggins officiating.
Dovie was born on May 9, 1940 in Borger, to Walter Eugene and Sara Hodges Scott. She married Donald L. Cherry on February 7, 1956 in Clovis, NM. They resided in Amarillo where Dovie practiced cosmetology. They had one daughter in 1959. In 1963 they moved to Hereford where they started a carpet and flooring business, and Dovie opened a beauty shop for a few years. After selling her beauty shop she worked with Don doing the books for the carpet business. In 1982 she proudly received her GED at the age of 42. In 1986, they closed the carpet business and Don became a minister, soon after so did Dovie. She played the piano during worship services, taught adult Sunday School Classes, as well as counseling those in need in the congregation.
After Don’s death in 1996, Dovie moved to Amarillo to become closer to family. She became reacquainted with Lesley Barrett, both being from the same home town; they married on October 3, 1998 in Canyon. Soon after the death of her mother in 2001, she founded 7 Star Horse and Family Center which soon became 7 Star Therapeutic Riding Center. She began using miniature horses for therapy at schools, nursing homes and the like.
Anyone who knew Dovie could relate to “big things come in small packages”. She was a spunky little lady with a lot of class. She enjoyed keeping up her yard, raising her mini horses, and playing a scratch off or two.
Dovie was born of a pioneer spirit. An overcomer of vision issues resulting from a car accident as a young girl, polio as a young teen, being told she would never walk again but with her hard determination she did. Her final battle was fought with the spirit of a warrior, she having earned her heavenly wings, is no longer suffering and will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Doolie Snow, Billie Wilson and Audrey Taylor, a son-in-law Rohn Ryder, Grandson in law Doug Barnett, Step-daughter Rhonda Zeigler.
She is survived by her husband Lesley; her daughter Leesa Ryder of Happy; four grandchildren, Nicole Barnett, Veronica Ryder of Amarillo, Buster and Donald Ryder of Happy; two great grandchildren Eathen and Logan Barnett of Amarillo; three step children Brenda Topper of Wheeler, Linda Hill of Panhandle, and Lesley Barrett Jr of Amarillo, and their children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers family suggests memorials be made to 7 Star Therapeutic Riding Center PO Box 50655, Amarillo, Texas 79159; or the Patriotic Paws 254 Ranch Trl, Rockwall Texas 75032
