Thomas Leo Hudson, M.D. died on August 8, 2023, at his home in Amarillo, Texas.
Tom was born on November 5, 1927 in Lake Wales, Florida, to Robert Hudson and Lucille Elizabeth Greeny Hudson. He joined the United States Army in 1946 and served in the U.S. Occupation of Japan. He then attended Tulane University for both undergraduate and medical school, where he held several long-standing track & field records. After medical school, he served in Korea, Vietnam, and several other places around the world. When he returned, he became a specialist in vascular and peripheral surgery and was promoted to Colonel. After 25 years in the Army, he maintained a private medical practice in Cleburne, Texas, for 17 years before moving to Amarillo and finishing his distinguished career as Chief of Surgery at the Amarillo Veterans Affairs Hospital.
He married Courtney Ann Rome on December 19, 1953. She was a nursing student at Mercy Hospital in New Orleans, where Tom worked in the lab. During their life together, Tom became very accomplished at golf, gardening, and rooting for the Dallas Cowboys!
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Edward Hudson (Sue) and Robert Eugene Hudson (Jan); and one daughter, Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years; a daughter, Terry Ann Hudson White (Mark) of Amarillo; three sons, Robert Lee Hudson (Tina) of Raleigh, NC, Thomas Gerard Hudson (Magda) of Fort Worth, TX, Christopher James Hudson (Julie) of Portland, OR; four grandchildren, Courtney Marie White of Amarillo, Austin Leo Hudson of Colorado Springs, CO, Hillary Ann White Pennock (Reagan) of Birmingham, AL, and Catherine Grace Hudson of Winston-Salem, NC; and one great-grandchild, Hudson Lee Pennock.
A vigil will be held on Monday, August 14 at 7:00 pm, and a funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 15 at 2:00 pm, both at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dr. Thomas Leo Hudson Scholarship Fund at the Amarillo College Foundation, P.O. Box 447, Amarillo, Texas 79178, or to the charity of your choice.
