Elena Byers, 95, of Amarillo died Wednesday, January 1, 2014.
Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel with Dr. Roger Hubbard of Lake Tanglewood Community Church officiating. Private family burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Elena was born July 29, 1918 in Mississippi, where she would eventually attend Ole Miss. She and her daughter, Paula, moved to Amarillo in 1954. Two years later, Elena was married to Wayne Byers.
Elena, called “Mawmaw” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was a strong, loving woman who put her family’s needs above her own. She was a Cub Scout den mother for her stepson, Tom. Elena was also an active member of First Presbyterian Church, the Ann Nassau Circle, and the Ross Rogers Women’s Golf Association. Elena and Wayne enjoyed marshaling the PGA Colonial Golf Tournament in Fort Worth for several years together.
In the 1980’s, she worked at the Bed and Bath shop with her future granddaughter in-law, Stephanie, though they didn’t know it yet. Elena was a resident of the Continental for four and a half years and resided at Ware for the last six months of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayne E. Byers; and eight siblings.
Survivors include her daughter Paula Gray and husband Bob of Lake Tanglewood; her stepson, Tom Byers and wife Misty of Dallas, TX; her grandchildren, Pam Gray, Art Gray and wife Lori, John David Gray and wife Stephanie, all of Amarillo, Nathan Byers, and Margaret Byers both of Dallas, TX; six great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
The family suggests memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1100 South Harrison, Amarillo, Texas 79101.
Visitation will be from 6-7:00 p.m., Friday, January 3, 2014 at the funeral home.
