Ernest Cothren, age 87 of Amarillo died Saturday, June 22, 2013 in Amarillo.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 27th at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of First Baptist Church. Dr. Winfred Moore will officiate. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Ernest was born February 19, 1926 in Lazare, Texas to William Thomas and Ruby Loller Cothren. He graduated from Paducah High School and entered the United States Marine Corps Reserve in July 1943 and was called to active duty to serve during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was relieved from active duty in 1951.
He married Barbara Pool in Dumas on June 15, 1947; she preceded him in death on August 4, 1986. Ernest graduated from Amarillo College with an Associate Degree in Engineering and began a career as an electrical engineer at Mason & Hanger – Silas Mason (Pantex) which would span over forty years. He retired in 1991.
He married Enid Martin on December 5, 1987. In addition to being devoted to his family; Ernest was devoted to his church and community. He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church, was a Master Mason for fifty years and a lifetime member of the DAV.
Ernest enjoyed cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, gardening and fixing things. He could fix anything and make it better than before.
The family would like to thank the Amarillo Home Care Services, Odyssey Hospice and the Thomas E. Creek Veteran’s Hospital and their caring staffs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Lillie Blythe, Frances Marier, Odel Cothren, Bill Cothren, and Jesse Cothren.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Enid; two daughters, Claudette McKee of Houston, and Debbie and husband John Lewis of Colorado; a son, Larry Cothren and wife Bonnie of Australia; six grandchildren, Christopher, Eric, Josh, Sara, Fielding and Alex; and ten great grandchildren, Parker, Logan, Matthew, Claire, Kennedy, Gage, Chloe, Hudson, Fielding, and Brooke.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 26 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 3915 S. Bell, Amarillo, TX 79109.
