Leroy Hughes 91, of Amarillo passed away on April 4, 2015. Just a few weeks shy of making it to the ripe young age of 92.
Funeral Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 6, 2015 at Lifeway Fellowship Church; 3305 Hancock with Dr. Randy Davis, Pastor Stanley Hughes, his son and Sherman Eastland officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home; 4100 S. Georgia St.. Family visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Wednesday April 8, 2015, at the funeral home.
Leroy was born April 30, 1923, in Texico, NM to Ernest Emory and Alta Mae Hughes. He attended Farwell High School where he played football and was a sprinter and hurdler on the track team, graduating in 1942.
He was a member of Hartley United Methodist Church for over 50 years and later attended Lifeway Fellowship Church. Leroy was in the Army, serving in the Philippines and at Pearl Harbor. He was a longtime farmer and rancher.
He was preceded in death by his wife Christine “Shorty” Hughes in 2012; a great grandson Ethan Robinson; two sisters and one brother.
Leroy is survived by three daughters Barbara Morris, Beverly Robinson and husband Randal all of Amarillo and Tinna Hood and husband Benny of Dallas; two sons Stanley Hughes and wife Jean of Richland, WA., and Bryan Hughes and wife Laurie of Amarillo; a sister Maxine Louder of Trinity, TX.; brother J.C. Hughes of Tulia; sixteen grandchildren, Beverly, Shawn, Todd, Tessa, Brooke, Bryce, Jeff, Sarah, James, Jared, Lara, Kent, Aaron, Adam, Kendra and Alexa; thirty nine great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express special thanks to Holly, Jessica and Sherman at Gentiva Hospice and Georgia Manor for the kindness and care given to Leroy.
