Gene Reynolds, age 80 of Amarillo, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015 in Amarillo.
Memorial Services were held 1:00 PM Saturday, September, 19th at First Presbyterian Church 1100 S. Harrison Street with Ross Clopton officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Gene was born in Walnut Grove, Minnesota on October 16, 1934 to Fannie and Philip Reynolds. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict, graduating from Balaton, Minnesota High School in 1952. After the war, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Agronomy. Years later, after moving to Texas, he returned to school and became an alcohol and drug abuse counselor. He held license number 237 in the state of Texas.
Being a recovering alcoholic himself, his life’s mission was to help others recover from the disease. He worked for six probation departments in the Panhandle, spending five days a week traveling to Hereford, Borger, Pampa, Canadian, Shamrock and Wheeler. On the weekends, he worked with others from the Amarillo area and attended AA meetings.
God gave Gene the ability to listen and share his experience, strength and hope with thousands of people. One friend wrote, “Gene was one of my most unforgettable characters. He walked the walk and talked the talk, was a true gentleman and did every day one day at a time.” He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Leslie, one sister, Phyllis Barrie and a nephew, Edgar Barrie.
He is survived by his wife, DeDe Reynolds of Amarillo, his three children, Lisa Bondi and husband Michael of Niwot, Colorado, Tom Reynolds of Bend Oregon and Colleen Olive and her husband, Dwayne of Kamiah, Idaho; DeDe’s three children, Elizabeth Webb and husband Todd of Alpharetta, Georgia, Walt Baum and wife Jennifer of Austin and Michael Baum and wife Anna of Midland; Gene’s six grandchildren and Dede’s six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his first wife Janice of Pheonix, Arizona, a sister in-law Lois Reynolds of Westbrook, Minnesota and numerous nieces and nephews.
