Gene Edwin Davis

September 19, 1927 — May 13, 2013

Gene Edwin Davis, 85, a long-time resident of Amarillo went home to glory on Monday, May 13, 2013.
A service celebrating his life will be at 12:00 pm Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church of Amarillo with the Rev. Nate Magloughlin and Carey Skinner officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral home, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Gene was born September 19, 1927 in Donley County, Texas to Adrian Grey and Emma Cooper Davis. He was raised in Hedley.
Gene married Joveda Faye Roberts on July 9, 1950. In two short months they would’ve enjoyed their 63rd anniversary.  Gene loved Jesus, celebrated Him daily and consistently attended church. As an active member of Trinity Baptist Church he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, cooked for a weekly men’s prayer breakfast, served for 10 years with Texas Baptist Men and more. Supported through the Southern Baptist Convention, Gene and Jody went to Tanzania in 1994 to build an AIDS clinic, and then returned in 1998 to put a roof on a hospital.
Gene was very proud of his country. A patriot to the bone, Gene served in the United States Marine Corps from December of 1945 to November of 1950. He fought in both World War II and the Korean War, proudly. He was an excellent marksman and in March of 1951 was awarded a trophy for scoring 246 out of 250, the highest score, on the rifle range – a record he held for 7 years. In 2011 he was privileged to go on an Honor Flight with fellow veterans to Washington DC. It was an emotional and honoring experience that he talked about the rest of his days. Gene was a home builder for years and in 1967 began the Building Trades program at Caprock High School where he taught for 21 years.
Gene and Jody exemplified the beauty of a committed marriage and have been an inspiration to their children and grandchildren. These past few months they have talked frequently about the good life they’ve had together. Even though he longed to be with Jesus, he struggled with leaving Jody alone. He was committed and selfless to the end and loved his entire family fiercely. Gene was always known for his strong faith in God and his desire for every single person he met to hear about Jesus’ love for them.  In fact the closer he came to leaving this earth, the more advantage he took of every opportunity to share his faith.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a sister LaJuana Reid, and his mother-in-love Willie Roberts.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jody, daughter Cheryl Whatley and husband Jerry, son Danny Davis and wife Becky all of Amarillo, son Tony Davis and wife Cheryl of Colorado, his grandchildren John Whatley, Jennifer Maxwell, Buster Keaton, Todd Whatley, Sarah Clark, Joshua Davis, and Shelby Keaton, 14 great-grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews.
