General Lawrence Dale Hoover, Jr.

General Lawrence Dale Hoover, Jr., 87 of Amarillo passed away Friday, October, 13, 2017.

Rosary will be said 6:30 p.m., Monday, October 16, 2017 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday at the St. Mary’s Cathedral with Rev. Grant Spinhirne as celebrant. Special Military Honors will follow approximately 11:00 a.m. at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial, 4101 Georgia, Amarillo, Texas 79110. Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia, Amarillo, Texas 79110.

General Hoover was born November 19, 1929 in Decatur to Lawrence Dale Hoover, Sr. and Frances Hoover.  He married Vivian Ethel Smith on October 14, 1952.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army in Korea, Vietnam and Japan and served in Special Forces as a Green Beret, achieving the rank of Brigadier General, SGUS and retiring in 1994.

General Hoover also worked as pharmacist after graduating with a PhD in Pharmacy from Southwestern State University in Weatherford, OK.  He later retired as a territory manager from Parke-Davis, a subsidiary of Pfizer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Vivian Ethel Hoover.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Vivian Porter of Coppell, Texas; two sons, Lawrence Dale Hoover, III and Burton Bonnard Hoover both of Amarillo; two granddaughters, Caryn Bailey Hoover and Ellie Marie Porter; a special friend, Laverne Simmons; and many other loving friends.
