George Franklin Benson, 80 of Amarillo, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2018.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5401 Bell St., with Bishop Lewis Britt officiating. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., Amarillo.
George was born on December 31, 1937 in Winthrop, Massachusetts to Arther and Lilah Benson. He graduated from Brackenridge High School and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Wayland Baptist University before serving in the Navy for ten years and the Army Reserve for twenty years. He worked for Bell Helicopter for nineteen and half years and was a teacher for Amarillo High School for five years. He was also active in various organizations such as Boy Scouts, Optimist Club and his church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and one brother.
George is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Benson; three sons, Mike Benson and Kim 1, Tim Benson and Kim 2, and Gary Benson and Kim 3; six grandsons, Eric and wife Larissa, Dillon, Bryan and J.D. Benson, and Taylor and Logan Leggett; and one great grandson, Colton Lee.
The family would like to thank the staff at Ussery Roan Veterans Home and the Open Heart Hospice team.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, 401 Tascosa Rd., Amarillo, TX 79124.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at the funeral home.
