George was born May 8, 1928 in Amarillo to Glenn and Marguerite Curtis. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1946 and then attended Texas A&M University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1950. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Fowler, on December 27, 1948 in Amarillo. They were married for 56 years until her passing in 2004.
George began his career at Pantex as an engineer and retired from Mason & Hanger as Human Resources Manager in 1993 after 38 years with the plant. He had been a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1952 and served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, Elder, and Clerk of Session. George was a cook for the Men’s Breakfast for many years, was a member of the Men’s Bible Study, and volunteered his time on numerous church committees. He also delivered for Meals on Wheels and was a HOSTS mentor for AISD.
George loved spending time fishing and hiking with his family in the Colorado mountains and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sports and activities. He loved being an Aggie and watching Aggie football. His hobbies included building and then gifting intricate models of historical sailing ships, some taking months to complete, and photographing sunrises and sunsets.
George was devoted to his Christian faith and placed God first in his life. He was a spiritual role model for his family and was a patient and loving husband, father, and “Papa.”
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara; grandson, Mac McGonagill; and sister, Helen Patterson.
George is survived by his son Tim Curtis and wife Laurie of Kingwood; daughters, Shayne Curtis McGonagill, Stacey Curtis, and Paige Curtis Biggs and husband Tony all of Amarillo; grandchildren Megan McGonagill, Luke Curtis and wife Kelsy, Juliana Curtis Wagner and husband Hunter, and Maggie, Jack, and Janie Biggs.
