George Hugh Keating

August 15, 1914 — June 17, 2009

George was born August 15, 1914, in El Paso, Texas.  He grew up in Toyah, Texas and graduated from The University of Texas in 1935 with a degree in Chemical Engineering.  He was a member of the engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi.  After graduating, he went to work for The Texas Company, later known as Texaco.  He worked for Texaco for 43 years and retired in 1978.  At the time of his retirement, he was the manager of the Texaco refinery in Amarillo.
His career with Texaco began in Port Arthur, Texas.  He moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1945 where he spent 3 ½ years.  He worked in Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela for 4 years from 1949 to 1953, after which he moved to El Paso.  In 1956 he was transferred to Santiago de Cuba, Cuba and worked there until 1958 at which time he was transferred back to Venezuela where he lived and worked for 5 more years.  In 1963 he moved to Guatemala City, Guatemala to start up a new refinery.  In 1964 he moved back to Port Arthur and worked there for three years.  He moved to Amarillo in 1967.
He was preceded in death by Virginia, his beloved wife of 69 years.
Survivors include his son, John Keating of Amarillo and wife Katie, grandson Kenneth Keating of Fort Worth and wife Robyn, and great-grandson Lake, granddaughter Kristin Keating of Dallas, sister Frances Means of El Paso and a brother Stephen Schubert of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
