Gerald Wood, age 81, of Claude died Friday August 12, 2011 in Amarillo, Texas.
Gerald was born the son of Carl and Georgia Wood in Shamrock, Texas. At the age of three weeks Gerald and his family moved to Claude. Gerald graduated from Claude High School in 1947 and went on to graduate from Texas Tech University in 1951. In 1951 Gerald joined the United States Air Force and became an air craft mechanic instructor. Gerald married his one true love, Melba Louise Newberry, on October 4, 1952 in Kamay, Texas. After discharge from the Air Force in 1955, Gerald continued to serve as a military instructor, until he began farming in Claude in 1963.
Gerald was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He enjoyed many activities with his sons and family including farming, hunting, gardening, and going to the mountains. Gerald was actively involved in the community of Claude, First Baptist Church of Claude, and in the lives of many people.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, August 15, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Claude with Pastor Dick Gravley and Pastor Charles Davenport officiating. The burial will be at Claude Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Wood will lie in state in the Schooler-Armstrong Chapel in Claude today and the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. Sunday August 14, 2011.
Survivors include his wife, Melba; his sons, Mark Wood and wife, Betty of Canyon, Dave Wood and wife, Tracey of Highland Village, Texas; his sister, Edwina Hupp and husband, Jack of Richmond, Texas; four grandchildren, Kristina Wood, Kelsey Wood, Jessica Wood, Savannah Wood; and many close friends who are considered as extended family.
