Geraldine Roush

November 3, 1924 — May 3, 2012

Memorial services will be at 4:00 p.m., Monday, in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel with Pastor David Schatte, of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.

Jerry was born November 3, 1924, in Amarillo to Fred and Irene Ponder.  When she was about a year old, they moved to Canadian, Texas, where she grew up and graduated from Canadian High School in 1941.  She had wonderful memories of her childhood in Canadian and her many activities, including tap dancing as a little girl, singing in a high school girl’s trio, being on the cheer team, attending school dances, and the close friendships she made during that time.  After her graduation, the family moved back to Amarillo and she attended Texas Tech for one semester until December, 1941, when WWII broke out.  She returned to Amarillo, went to business school, and became a secretary for Southland Life Ins. Co.

While attending a USO dance, she met Robert Lee (Red) Roush, and they were married in 1944.  Red was sent overseas shortly after their marriage, and after returning a year later, he was an instructor at Amarillo Air Force Base.  Jerry talked about their lasting friendships with other Base couples and the fun they had when they danced to Big Band music at The Nat and Aviatrix and played bridge, poker, and canasta.  She was a homemaker and mother and had 34 happy years with Red until his sudden death in 1978.  After his death, she found a job as an office clerk with Zales Jewelers in Sunset Center (and later in Western Plaza), where she worked until her retirement in 1990.

Jerry was an extraordinarily kind, considerate, and generous person, a wonderful mother and grandmother, and an animal lover.  She was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she served on the Ladies Altar Guild and Ladies Day Guild and chaired the Christmas Deliveries to Shut-ins Project for several years.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandy Duncan and friend David Cox; her son, Rusty Roush and wife Debbie; two grandchildren, Ashley Witt and husband Ryan, and Paige Roush; two great-grandchildren, Dane and Gage Witt; and her beloved dog, Sylvester.

The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation for the wonderful, loving care Jerry received from BSA Hospice nurses and volunteers and caregivers obtained through the Area Agency on Aging.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to BSA Hospice, PO Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105  or to Animal Rescue Shelter, 12500 S. Washington, Amarillo, TX 79118.
