Gilbert Escobedo Garza, age 56, of Amarillo died Friday, August 23, 2012.

Vigil services will be at 6:00 p.m., Monday, August 26, 2013 in Brentwood Chapel at Schooler Funeral Home.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 27, 2013 in St. Mary’s Cathedral with Msgr. Harold Waldow as celebrant.  Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.

Gilbert was born November 10, 1956 in Kenedy, Texas to Pedro and Margarita Garza.  He graduated from Wellington High School in 1977 and moved to Amarillo where he attended Amarillo College taking courses in auto mechanics.  He enjoyed working on his suburban and loved to do home repairs, even though he was not always successful.  He has previously been employed by Sears and La Quinta Hotels.

Gilbert joined Amarillo Emergency Service (“AES”) on November 11, 1980, and after successfully completing his probationary training period, became a regular member on May 12, 1981.  After almost 33 years of voluntary service to the citizens of the City of Amarillo, Potter and Randall counties, there is little that Gilbert did not experience.  From severe weather spotting, to traffic and crowd control, to practicing his Emergency Medical Technician (“EMT”) training and skills, there was nothing he would not do to help someone else.  He loved his work with AES and the membership.

Gilbert has been recognized with the following awards during his AES tenure:  Outstanding Achievement for aiding with roadblocks during snow and ice storms; Outstanding Achievement for help with hurricanes Katrina and Rita victims; Presidential Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award for Volunteerism; Safe Driving Award for 30 years of safe driving; and Member of the Year Award (selected by peers) in 1982, 1987, 1988, 2005, and 2007.

In AES, Gilbert has held the ranks of Regular Member, Communications Lieutenant, Administrative Lieutenant, and Commander/Major.  He will be remembered with tremendous love, respect, and for being the organizations “Stealth Unit”.

Gilbert was a private man who didn’t want to burden others with his problems, but was always there for others.  He was a loving brother, uncle, and a devoted friend to many.  He always had a smile and a wave for anyone who came his way.  Gilbert was a special man who will be truly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Alex, Pedro, Raymond, and Juan Garza; and a sister, Dominga Renteria.

Survivors include a brother, Ruben Garza and wife, Lou of Amarillo; five sisters, Angie Howell of Shamrock, Paula Sotelo and husband Juan of Stinnett, Margie De La Rosa and husband Frank of Elk City, Oklahoma, Janie Cantu and husband David of Austin, Maria Koetting of Amarillo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
