Gordon Laverne Carey
February 10, 1923 — June 22, 2009
Gordon L. Carey went home to be with his Lord on June 22, 2009. He was 86 years old. He was the son of Ross and Virginia Carey. He was born in Apperson, OK and graduated from North Oklahoma Jr. College. He served in the US Marine Corp from January 1943 to March 1945.
He worked for Santa Fe Railroad for 43 years in the engineering department. After retirement, he volunteered for the VA Hospital for over 23 years. He married Carollee Payne on August 29, 1947. She preceded him in death on June 15, 1960. He married Betty L. Sherrer on December 20, 1961 and they were married for 47 years last December.
Gordon was a member of Kingswood United Methodist Church and Recycled Teens. He belonged to the Aldersgate Sunday School Class. He was greatly loved, and will be missed by his family and a host of friends.
He is also preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Charles E. Sherrer and wife Carol of Springfield, VA and Mike Sherrer and wife Cheryl of Amarillo; two daughters, Pam Tennison of Fort Worth and Debby Carey and husband Lightnin’ McDuff of Amarillo; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a little dog named Molly.
