Lt Col. Gwynne White, age 93 of Amarillo died May 16, 2016
Graveside Services will be Thursday, May 19th at 2:00 PM at Llano Cemetery. Military Honors will be rendered by the US Air Force. Interment will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Lt. Col Gwynne White was born November 10, 1922 in Farwell, Texas to Albert Dewey and Bessie Lee Nuckolls White. He was the one of six children. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1940. He was a flight mechanic in the South Pacific. In 1945 he went to University of Southern California where he graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He then reenlisted in the Air Force as a 2nd Lt in 1949. He flew in Europe, was the head of space command for the Air Force, was part of the Strategic Air Command and worked at White Sands. He then went back to USC to obtain his Master’s degree. Lt. Col. White served during Vietnam and flew C130’s. He retired from the military in 1968.
On May 10, 1969 he married Evelyn Patricia Rippens in Las Vegas, NV at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church. The family then moved to Vista, CA. While living in CA they enjoyed traveling and being with family. Evelyn died December 24, 1987 and Gwynne returned to Texas.
Back in Texas, Gwynne enjoyed spending time with family and fishing. Gwynne was a humble man, who lived his life honorably, just as he served his country.
The family will receive guests at the funeral home tonight from 5 PM until 6 PM.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and by a sister, Theda Taylor and four brothers, Wilbert, Milbert, Joe and Henry White.
He is survived by his many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, many of which were present at his 90th birthday celebration in 2012.
