Harry Henry Herber

November 17, 1922 — December 30, 2020

Harry Henry Herber, 98, of Amarillo, Texas, was called to be with the Lord on December 30, 2020.

Harry was born to George and Martha Houser Herber on Nov. 17, 1922 in Lipscomb, Texas. He spent his childhood in this small town. He graduated from Lipscomb High School in 1940 and attended West Texas State University (now WTAMU) in Canyon, Texas.  When World War II began, he enlisted with the United States Army Air Force.  He served in the military from 1943 until 1946.  After returning from the war, he moved to Darrouzett, Texas where he worked in the family grocery store, Herber Grocery.  He met and married Nadine Susan Smith on Feb. 28, 1948.  Harry and Nadine moved to Amarillo in 1956 where he worked at the Amarillo Air Force Base, earned his insurance license, and worked part-time selling insurance.  When the air base closed, he started his full-time career in the insurance industry in Amarillo.  In 1979 Harry moved to Lubbock and continued his insurance career until he retired in 1992.  In 2001, Harry and Nadine returned to Amarillo and lived there until his death.

Harry was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Amarillo.  He was active in the China, Burma, India Veteran’s Association (CBI) for many years.  He enjoyed barbequing, making homemade German sausage, completing crossword puzzles, and working in his yard.  Harry was a Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers fan, and he enjoyed following Texas Tech athletics.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Harold Lee, Gary Wayne and Edward “Ed” Herber; and three sisters: Josephine “Josie” Hancock, Ruth Gooch, and Ruby Steinle.

Harry leaves behind his wife of 73 years, Nadine, and their three children, Kay Herber of Fort Smith, Arkansas; David Herber and wife, Melissa of Dallas; and Scott Herber and wife, Lisa of Vernon. Survivors also include his four grandchildren and their spouses, Ben Herber and wife Rachel; Caroline Newsom and husband, Jonathan; Alex Herber and wife Haley; and Max Herber. Harry had seven great-grandchildren: Reid and Layne Newsom; Harrison, Hudson and Scarlett Herber; and Henry and Nora Herber.
