Mr. Lewis was born on January 8, 1922 in Clarksville, Arkansas to Buddy and Rubye Lewis. After Herbert’s first semester of college, he joined the Arkansas Army National Guard in 1940. During training maneuvers in the Seattle area, Pearl Harbor was bombed. Shortly after, his unit was sent to Umnak Island in the Aleutians to build air bases. After 17 months there, he transferred to the Army Air Corps and began training in gunnery and aircraft mechanics. During that training, he found himself in Amarillo taking aircraft mechanics training at Amarillo Air Base where he met Helen Baldwin at a USO dance where she promptly stole his heart. They were married in August of 1944 in Florida, prior to his deployment with the 8th Air Corps to Bury St. Edmunds Air Base in England. His unit arrived as the Battle of the Bulge was raging and they began flying bombing missions as soon as the weather cleared. He flew missions as top turrett gunner in a B-17 over Germany until the end of the war. After the war, he found his way back to Amarillo where he and Helen began their family. Herbert and Helen were blessed with the births of Linda, Larry and Donna. He eventually opened Lewis Picture Framing in 1972, which served Amarillo for 36 years. He resided at Ussery-Roan Texas State Veteran’s Home for the last 19 months before his passing.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two daughters, Linda Lewis and Donna Kidd.
Mr. Lewis is survived by one son, Larry Lewis and wife Tammy of Amarillo; one grandchild, Angela Dale of Bowling Green, KY; and one niece, Marie Merrill of Maumee, OH.
The family suggests memorials be made to Texas Panhandle Honor Flight, P.O. Box 3218, Amarillo, TX 79116.
