Herbert Sutton

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Herbert Charles Sutton of Amarillo, Texas on August 17, 2024 at age 94. Herb was born in Augusta, Wisconsin and came to Amarillo in the Air Force during the Korean War. He met the love of his life and wife, Gwen Coble Sutton at First Presbyterian Church where they were married in 1957.

Herb owned Automotive Automatic on Lipscomb and served the community as a master mechanic for 30 years. He could be seen at the Amarillo Speed Bowl in the early 60s with winning car #69. He served as president of the Amarillo Garageman’s Association. Retirement found him trout fishing in the mountains of Colorado and woodworking. Herb was incredibly funny with the ability to fix almost anything. He was a champion of the underdog and always willing to help neighbors in need. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Gwen Coble Sutton; daughter, Julie Sutton; parents Erwin and Lucille Barka Sutton; brother, Leland Sutton of Augusta, WI; and sister, Jeanette Sutton Williams of Minneapolis, MN. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Sutton Zernial; grandsons Benjamin, Wesley and Christopher Zernial, and cat, Woofie.

Services will be held for Herbert Sutton at 11 am on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Schooler Funeral Home; 4100 S. Georgia in Amarillo with a reception immediately afterwards. Donations in his memory may be contributed to Meals on Wheels of Amarillo.
