Hubert Odell Moffett

Hubert Odell Moffett, was born on May 3, 1952 in San Marcos, Texas to Hubert Leo Moffett and Elizabeth Jane Moffett. The Lord called him home on March 4, 2012, two months shy of his 60th birthday.
Funeral services will be 12 noon, Wednesday, March 7, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Perry Hunsaker officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. in Wayside Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.
Odell was the older of two children, sharing his childhood with his younger sister, Sharon. The two remained close and shared a special connection until his death. Odell graduated from Tulia High School in 1970 and attended Texas Tech University the following year. On June 10, 1976, he bound himself in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Mary Denette Davis, from Vigo Park. Three children were born of this union, one son, Jedediah D. “Jed” and two beautiful daughters, Julie Denette and Jacklyn Dawn. Following their marriage, Odell and Denette spent several years farming in the Vigo Park community before moving to Amarillo. Odell sold real estate and insurance in Amarillo before completing his degree at West Texas A&M University. He spent the last ten years of his life working in his true calling, serving as a teacher in area schools.
Odell was active in his community fulfilling a life long passion for teaching children and young adults. He was active in St. Paul United Methodist church where he was a long standing member of the church choir and devoted years of service to the St. Paul Youth group. Odell was active in the area Boy Scouts and long served as Troop Master of Troop 99, which he co-founded along with his long time friend and neighbor, Tom Scherlen. Odell devoted many hours of his life to coaching, teaching and supporting youth activities in the area. Perhaps most important, Odell and Denette created a home that was a “home away from home” for hundreds of people throughout his lifetime. For decades children and stray animals alike flocked to the home he built with his wife, knowing that in the small house in the middle of Meadow Drive, they would always find love, support and a helping hand when they needed it. Odell lived his life with honor, grace, and strength that will resonate in the lives he touched for years.
Odell was a loving husband, a proud father and a doting grandfather. He surrounded himself in life with his friends and family. He will be cherished and remembered for his laughter, his lessons, and the love he enveloped his family and friends with.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Leo Moffett and Elizabeth Jane James.
Odell is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Denette Moffett and their children, Jedediah and wife Becky of Houston; Julie and husband Sean Chambers of Oklahoma City; Jackie and husband Chris Roy of Houston; his sister Sharon Moffett Thompson and brother-in-law Joe Bob Thompson of Tulia; sister-in-law Evelyn Denise McGinnis and brother-in-law, Dale McGinnis of Amarillo; five young grandchildren, Bethany Rebecca Moffett, Lainie Denette Chambers, Charlotte Lynn Moffett, Brock Alan Chambers, and William Henry Moffett; nine nieces and nephews, Jacob Thompson, Jennifer (Thompson) Smith, Benjamin Lee, Brandon Lee, Andrew McGinnis, Bradley McGinnis, Brittaney McGinnis, David McGinnis and Kimberly (McGinnis) Thomas; his step-mother Opal Bryan Moffett; three step-brothers, Larry Bryan, Randy Bryan, and Lyle Bryan; and two step-sisters, Shannon Bryan Russell and Sheila Bryan Moffett.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, at the funeral home.
