Maxine was born in McPherson, Kansas, on August 3, 1908, the same year that the Model T Ford was introduced. She and her older sisters, Helen and Frances, and younger brother, Dwight, were children of Lora and Roy E. Elliott. The family traveled by horse and buggy until they bought their first car in 1925 when they moved to Walters, Oklahoma. She attended Oklahoma University for a year before her marriage to Raymon Faulkner on June 1, 1930. They moved to Groom, Texas in May 1931, where Raymon was a lineman for Southwestern Public Service Company. Their son, Max Ray, was born May 27, 1932. In March of 1933, the day of FDR’s inauguration, Raymon was transferred to Amarillo. Their daughter, Elaine, was born October 22, 1934. “Black Dusters” made child-raising difficult, but they had help from Maxine’s parents who moved in with the family in 1937. She has been a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church since October 23, 1938.
Maxine received her BA and Masters in Education from West Texas State College and taught mostly 3rd grade at San Jacinto Elementary School until her retirement. Her husband Raymon died March 9, 1976. She became a teacher at Mother’s Day Out at Polk Street Methodist Church for twenty years, but was still able to enjoy traveling both at home and overseas. In 1995, she volunteered for the RSVP Children’s Immunization Program and continued until two years ago when the wind was too strong for her to walk from her car to the hospital. She and her daughter-in-law, Kenda, delivered Meals on Wheels for a number of years every Friday before her fall on her way to church two months ago. She still managed to play the piano for her Sunday School class that day.
Survivors include her son, Max Ray Faulkner and wife, Kenda; her daughter Elaine Brownell and husband, Dr. Robert Brownell. She has six living grandchildren, Dr. David Faulkner and wife, Sarah; Darrell Faulkner and wife Jan; Mark Brownell and wife, Kim; Sharon Ewing and husband, Rick; Susan Wiebe and husband, Everett; and Debbie Brownell. She is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren, Amanda Martin and husband, John; Rachel Gottschalk and husband, Shawn; Travis Faulkner; James Elliott Faulkner; Kali, Seth, and Cade Brownell; Kelson and Bailey Ewing; Jordan, Garrett and Madison Wiebe.
She was preceded in death by all of her immediate family and two grandchildren, Warren and Mindi Brownell.
