Jack Pallan Dial

January 27, 1919 — February 16, 2012

Jack Pallon Dial, 93, passed away on Thursday, February 16 at BSA Hospice. Services will be held at 10 A.M. Monday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Batson officiating.  Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia.

Mr. Dial was born in Jacksonville, Texas in 1919 and graduated from Bovina High School.  He served in the United States Army in World War II and while stationed in Ft. Worth, married his life-long sweetheart, the former Mary Grace Smith. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Arts from North Texas State College in Denton, Texas.  Moving to Amarillo in 1948, he worked with Walter Wirtz and his brother-in-law, Perry Chambers in constructing several buildings in the area, including the mausoleum at Llano Cemetery.  Mr. Dial made a major decision to change his life work to become an educator.  He earned a Masters Degree in Education from North Texas State College and his Administrative Certification.  In 1951, he was hired as a shop teacher at Sam Houston Jr. High School.  He became Assistant Principal there in 1958 and then finished out his career as Principal of Sam Houston, retiring after 32 years at the same school. He was a Sam Houston Ranger at heart.  Mr. Dial was actively involved in the San Jacinto Lions Club of Amarillo.  He and his wife, Grace, faithfully served at First Baptist Church.  He has been a member for 64 years.  In his retirement years,he was well-known for his long walks and his bus rides from downtown out to BSA, the VA, and nursing homes to visit the First Baptist church members who were ill and to visit his many friends who had served as principals at the other junior high schools.  Mr. Dial has left a legacy that men everywhere could emulate.  He copied the entire Bible in his own handwriting, using 17 composition books, to leave for his daughters.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Grace, and 8 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his daughters, Pam Taylor and her husband, Tom,of Belton and Penny Gardner, and her husband, Dale, of Amarillo.  Also grandchildren, Holly Mayes of Belton, Allison Ridgway of Lubbock, Amy Harrison of Lubbock, Bryan Jack Thomas Taylor of New York City, and Landon Gum of Norman.  Great-grandchildren:  Sawyer, Taylor, Hayden, Swade, Payton, Gracie, Grayson and Ella.  Pall bearers will be Dale Gardner, Tom Taylor, Bryan Jack Thomas Taylor, Landon Gum, Scott Harrison, and Michael Mayes.
